Surgical Nursing is a specialized branch of nursing focused on providing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. Surgical nurses, also known as perioperative nurses, play a vital role in the surgical team, providing care and support before, during, and after surgery. Their responsibilities encompass patient preparation, assistance during surgery, and post-operative recovery.

Key Roles of Surgical Nurses:

Preoperative Care

• Assesses patients' health status and prepares them for surgery, including reviewing medical history and conducting physical assessments.
• Provides education and reassurance to help patients understand the surgical process and manage pre-surgery anxiety.
• Administers preoperative medications and assists with hygiene and preparation for surgery

Intraoperative Care

• Works in the operating room as a scrub nurse or circulating nurse, assisting the surgical team and ensuring a sterile environment.
• Monitors patient vitals, maintains surgical supplies, and assists with surgical instruments during procedures.
• Provides communication between the surgical team and family members outside the operating room.

Postoperative Care

• Monitors and assesses the patient's recovery, including vital signs, wound healing, and overall condition.
• Manages pain relief and medications, monitors for complications like infection or hemorrhage, and responds quickly to emergencies.
• Educates patients and families on wound care, activity restrictions, and signs of potential complications.

Patient Advocacy

• Ensures patients’ rights and preferences are respected throughout the surgical process.
• Supports patients’ emotional needs before, during, and after surgery.
